The game of advertising is a constantly changing one. There are an infinite number of options to use when promoting a brand. The individual options are often versatile, allowing many ways to spread your message. But there is a flip side to this area, one that can spell problems depending on the effort you choose.
Due to the ever evolving nature of technology, many ad options run the risk of becoming obsolete. As trends grow and fluctuate, a brand can find itself out of their investment if they don’t plan well enough. This is evident in the discrepancy between promoting with radio versus billboards.
The history of radio
At one time, radio was one of the prime modes of communication and entertainment. Before television was a thought, developers were sending messages using radio waves. This would eventually spawned a reigning golden era of radio. People all over could receive communications without using mail or leaving home. This also made drives more entertaining!
It makes sense then that it would go on to be a prime mode of promotions for brands. Unfortunately, the rise of television, and later on streaming services crippled the industry. Now most people use services like Spotify or Apple Music to enjoy this medium of content.
Why choose billboards?
Even if people aren’t listening to the radio as much in their cars, they are still passing by many billboards. As long as travel is possible, you are bound to run across these. Whether digital or static, the value of this medium remains strong.

Hi, I’m Jason Sirotin. Today I’m speaking with Bill Hobbs, who is the owner and proprietor, managing director, everything of Effortless Outdoor Media, which is a outdoor media advertising placement company. Why use billboards rather than radio?
Bill Hobbs:
That’s a great question. The reason to use billboards as opposed to radio advertising is, the most important thing is that there are so many listening platforms besides radio. There’s satellite. People are listening to Spotify in their phones, in their car. They’re listening to different devices, so and the fact that with radio, you have a hundred different stations. So you have to decide which station to listen to. If somebody is listening to radio as opposed to Spotify or satellite radio, most people will change the channel to a different radio station when a commercial comes on. Where a billboard, you’re driving by whatever road you’re on or artery or highway, and the billboard is right in your face. You can’t help but see the location… can’t turn it off. You can’t do anything with that.
Jason Sirotin:
